During the month of June, I'm going to post a new writing tip every day, and challenge you to use it in your writing. One improvement, every day, for an entire month. The June Challenge will take place on my new website for writers - www.downriverwriting.com
Whether you are just planning a new book, or already writing the first draft, or editing your finished manuscript, this challenge will work for you. I guarantee, wherever you are in your writing career, doing this challenge will help you become a better writer.
Why do I call it a challenge and not just a series of posts with writing advice? Well, it will be a series of advice on different aspects of writing, but each post will be practical and applicable, and I will end with a specific challenge to you on how to use it, that very day, in your writing. Homework, if you like. Because I don't believe we learn by reading, I believe we learn by doing.
Many of the posts--most, I hope--will discuss something that's new to you, or will explain a new twist or application to something you have heard. But there are bound to be some posts on a writing skill you already know and use. Just because we know it, doesn't mean we always do it. So do the exercise anyway, solidify that writing skill in your mind so it becomes an unconscious part of the way you write. I'm going to be doing this challenge right along with you, every day, because you can never get too much practice using good writing techniques.
There are three things that have to happen before real learning can take place. First, you have to be understand the new skill and want to learn it. I'll provide the first half of that one if you provide the second half. And if you don't understand something I've said, use the comments section to ask questions. I promise to answer every one. The second thing necessary for learning is to use the new skill--that's where the daily challenge comes in. The third necessary thing for learning to take place is to be held accountable. To keep showing up and doing the work.
How can you hold yourself accountable? By leaving a comment each day after you've done the challenge. Let me know what you think of the challenge. How did you use it? Did you see the improvement? Do you already know and use it? Or just simply write, "Done!" Hold yourself accountable, publicly, to do this challenge every day. Of course it's not a requirement. Some of you won't want to leave comments, and you're still welcome to join us in doing this challenge. But studies show that those people who make themselves accountable publicly are far more likely to succeed at a given task.
There will be days you can't do it. I'll be at a conference for four days in the middle of June (don't worry, I'll bank posts to go live those days) and may not get to respond to all the comments those days. But I'll catch up as soon as I'm back. If you miss a day or two, catch up as soon as you can. Just don't give up. It's important to nurture your talent. To grow your talent. That's what happens when you respond to a challenge.
Studies show that creativity increases when people are relaxed and having fun. Join me in June, and lets have fun writing together. Who knows where it might take you! So head on over to http://downriverwriting.com/writing-tips/may-29th-2019
