Book/E-Book Marketing Challenge

7/31/2014

Congratulations! You've written a book!
Now you have to market it. What? You're not a marketer, you're a writer! Why waste your time marketing when you could be writing your next piece?
My mother had a saying for a time like this:
Picture
He who has a thing to sell
And goes & whispers in a well
Is not so likely to make the dollars
As he who climbs a tree and hollers!

Marketing has become a lot more complicated since my mother first heard that little jingle. Nevertheless, it still comes down to the simple fact that if people don't know about your books, or your poetry, or your articles, they can't read them. And writing is meant to be read.

So during the month of September, I'm challenging you to develop your marketing skills. Every day there will be a new challenge for you to master. And every daily challenge will be something you can do, WITHOUT PAYING ANY MONEY, to make your book more visible to readers. Some will be easy, others more difficult; some quick, others more time-consuming; some you'll already have done, some will be things you've been meaning to 'get around to', and some will be new ideas for you. And we'll all be on this journey together, so if you get tired, or discouraged, we'll be there for you.

Who will benefit from taking this challenge? Well, common thinking is that you should start marketing your book at least a year before it's published, so this is not only for those who already have a published book (traditionally or self-published) but also for anyone who is about to publish. And although I say 'book', what you are really marketing is yourself as an author, so this challenge should also be useful to those who write blogs, short stories, poems or articles for magazines and anthologies.

I'm designing this challenge to be accessible to those who are just beginning to market their work, and yet challenging enough to be useful to those who have been marketing their work for a while.

I want it to be interactive and communal. You don't have to, but you'll gain more if you participate in the comments after each day's challenge. Did you complete it? Where can we view it? Ask questions, answer other participants' questions, let me know how useful each challenge was for you, or suggest alternatives if one doesn't work for you.

I'm excited about this! I know we're going to learn a lot, and push ourselves to improve our marketing skills, and have fun doing it!
I hope you'll join me this September. Meanwhile, please help spread the word about this challenge.

Jane,
This sounds fantastic! I just published a collaborative book the end of June, with some marketing, and am going into the second book. I'd love more marketing tips and a greater understanding of how various things work. So I'm in and I'm excited. Thank you for putting this together!

Hi Brad. Congrats on the completion of your project. Knowing you are prepared to help market your work is important to publishers, so lets hope this challenge boosts your profile with those considering your book.

The challenge will take place here on this site, not on LinkedIn, but I'll try to keep the LI crowd informed, too.

Hi Russel,
No problem. Several others have told me they're on holiday the first week or couple of weeks in September but will join as soon as they get back. Check in with me near the end of this month before you leave, if you want, and I'll send you the first few challenges in advance. Or just catch up when you return. Or just start in on the challenges we're doing when you get back. Whatever works for you.

Yes, count me in! I just got derailed right after the second book in my fantasy series was released (I hadn't really been notified by my publisher), and I'm having trouble getting in gear again. Marketing makes me growl in my throat. Makes me wish I never wrote my book. It's not supposed to be like this. I was going to write my book, release it, sell a million copies and accept the applause of the world. Grrr... Thanks for doing this, I need the kick in the pants.

I hope by the end of September, you'll think marketing is as much fun as writing. And, like writing, it has to be done regularly if you're going to see any progress. My goal in this challenge is to make that regular practice a lot easier through establishing good habits.

My novel, Elizabeth's Landing, has been out a year, has won awards, but the marketing side of this life still stuffs me, grumbling, under the desk most days. People get paid big bucks to do what we're trying to figure out, usually as an afterthought on meager budgets. Thanks, Jane, for giving us the chance to push forward together.

So true, Katy. I can see you grumbling under your desk - it's in a direct line of vision from under mine!
Marketing is hard work, but it can also be fun, especially if we do it communally. I hope, by the end of this challenge, you're actually enjoying it!
...Okay, I'll call it a success if you're at least out from under your desk. :-)

I'm looking forward to September. Please check in here on August 25 for a pre-challenge "get ready" post. If you don't already have a website, please take the time to build one. You will likely have to pay a provider for your URL site. This is one of the few, if not the only thing I will ask you to do that will cost you money. It's really best to be able to make changes, and add things to your website yourself, and to have a blog on your site, or at least a page you can use to post items on. If you can't write code (I can't) choose a provider who offers a drag-and-drop website builder. Talk to you again on Aug 25, and see you in September!
