InSeMaMo  (International September Marketing Month)       is About to Begin!

8/24/2014

The September Marketing Challenge begins in seven days! I hope you're as excited about it as I am. But if you don't know what the heck I'm talking about, you should go to my previous post where I describe it, HERE.

In this post I'm going to discuss your website. Because every author needs a website - it's the central axis of your entire marketing campaign - I'm going to assume when we begin on September 1st that you have one. So I thought I should give you some warning.  :-)

The most important thing I learned about websites  from marketing guru Thomas Umstattd
is that your blog must be on your website. If your blog is at a separate URL - or through a different provider - every time you write a new post and send people to it, you're sending them AWAY from your website, AWAY from the place where they can see your books and click to buy them.

Why have a blog at all? Why not just a website? A blog does two things. It
creates interest and it makes your website interactive - and both of these draw people.

Imagine you owned a store, and very rarely got in any new merchandise. People would stop coming, right?
Well, it takes months, if not years, to write a book, but it takes hours to write a post. You're providing new things to look at, and people will come in to see them.

The second advantage of a blog is, it gives visitors to your site a place where they can talk to you, by leaving comments and seeing your responses. Imagine you invited someone to your home, but refused to let them talk to you.
They'd leave, and might not come back.

Some of September's challenges will involve your website and your blog, which is why I'm making this suggestion before we begin.

There is a wonderful variety of authors taking this challenge, and we can all learn a lot from each other.
If you already have a website, please share it with us. Leave a short comment introducing yourself and add your website URL. Then, over this next week, drop back here, read through the comments and check out each others' sites. If there's a place on their site to leave a comment, say hello, tell them you're taking this challenge too, and comment on their site.

Hello there, I'm up for this - although I'm pleased to say I already have a blog and website linked together at www.lizbroomfieldbooks.com - although I've only just started that one, I have had a professional website and blog for a number of years.

I run a business and I'm passionate about helping other people to realise that you don't have to jump into it all guns blazing and no income, but can take the leap more slowly! I've most recently written about how to run your business once you've got past the start-up phase, and I'm getting some good comments on that one. Although I'm an editor, the books are suitable for anyone who's self-employed, including writer-entrepreneurs and indie publishers.

Hope everyone enjoys this exciting journey and thanks to Jane Ann for having this idea and providing this resource!

Nice website, Liz. I had trouble finding a blog on it, until I realized every page is like a blog, and comments are possible on each page. Interesting. I think I like that. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, I'm sorry - the blog is under "news" and I do allow comments on the other pages. It's quite a new site at the moment.

In similar vein, I can't find an RSS feed for this page, can't spot the button and my blog reader can't find a feed. Is there one, or do I need to sign up for the newsletter / will I then receive all of the posts in September?

Good point. There is an RSS feed on the right side, underneath all the stuff. I'll try to move it up. Fact is, I don't know if anyone's ever used it. Try it and let me know.

If not, just come to this blog every day in September, there'll be a new challenge posted every day.

Of course, you can also sign up for my newsletter. I think there's lots of good stuff in it, like writing tips, and I always announce everything I'm doing there first, like this Marketing Challenge, and the Launch Team for my next book, a YA SF novel. But you can join the marketing challenge without signing up for it. I'm an inclusive person, not an exclusive one.
Cheers,
Jane Ann

Excellent, thank you - found it and got it on the blog reader. I find it much easier to read everything there than visit individual pages, so that's perfect. Looking forward to starting the challenge on Monday!

Thanks for doing this! My first book came out in January (Cooper's Folly, a light, sweet rom-com), and I still have much to learn about marketing! I have a website - www.marystrand.com - but no blog on it yet. I basically do mini-blogs on my personal Facebook page, but I know I need to step up my game. In September, I'll try!

Hi Mary, the problem with Facebook is that a) it tends to feel it owns your content and b) it changes how things work too regularly. Having a blog on your website really is the best thing to do and isn't hard. If you're using WordPress, I hope it's OK to say I have some hints and tips on my day job website about how to set up a blog on it. Sorry if that's not allowed - I won't put the URL on!

Thanks, Liz! I know FB isn't ideal: it's just what I'm good at. A blog is on my to-do list!

Hi Liz,
I appreciate your hesitation. But we're all here to help each other. Sharing info, tips and URLs is part of that, and I encourage everyone to share. But I'd like everyone to avoid direct selling. "Buy my - book, product, etc. " - isn't what this is about. On the other hand, "I explain how to do this for free on my site, here's the URL" is great. So is "There's a site that's really good on this subject, here's the URL"
This challenge isn't about me, it's about YOU. What's useful to YOU. Sales pitches aren't, but sharing info is. Go for it.

OK, thank you - my resources on setting up WordPress can be found here: http://libroediting.com/blog/students-small-businesses-word-users/#blog those are free resources just on my blog, and my blog has little to do with my books (although they draw some material from the business side of it). I'm completely passionate about not selling a book to people that then involves buying another resource, so I link to a lot of extra free stuff that I provide on my website in the books themselves - you'll see my posts are full of screenshots and links and useful stuff. I hope that helps a few people.

Mary, a wordpress blog can only go on a wordpress website. If you have another website provider, you'll need to do it some other way. Alternatively, a page on your website for "News and Views" would allow you to add the kind of content you'd put into a blog w/o the hassle of setting up a blog. It just wouldn't allow for a discussion after, such as we're having here.
Lots of options. Not everyone likes blogging.

Yes, I didn't realise Mary wasn't using WordPress till after I'd posted that. You could always blog on WordPress and link to it on the website if the website doesn't have its own blogging platform or indeed do a News and Views page. The important thing is to keep updating content on the website, as the search engines really do like that.

Thank you both! I've had many friends talk about WordPress and am interested in it. Just have to figure out what to do and how to do it, and those are not my best skill sets.

A cautionary note: If your intent is to be a blogger, setting up a separate blogsite is a fine idea. If your intent is to be an author and market your books, it is not a good idea to have a blogsite separate from your website, even with a link. (See above post for why.)
Wordpress blogs are also terrible about allowing comments from visitors who do not have WordPress accounts themselves. More about reader-friendly practices later in this challenge.

The thing WordPress is terrible about is finding out someone has a long-forgotten WordPress ID and insisting they enter that. I set up my comments to need an email address and name, which seemed to sort out any problems with non-WordPress users, but you do have to fiddle around with the defaults to get that to work!

Thanks, Mary Strand, for the link to this site! I have started working on a WordPress site but I need to finish it. And decide how to do a blog with it. I have many questions. I'm hoping to get some answers here. I'm ready for the challenge. Here's what I have so far: www.barbararaerobinson.com

Nice website, Barb. Your blog is on your home page- an interesting choice. Gives it a friendly, personal feel, but may get in the way of showcasing your books on the home page later on. One thing- you mention in your bio that you've published a book, but there's nothing about it there or on your book page?

Jane--That's why I signed up here. I know this website needs a lot of work. I would like a front page that introduces my books and the blog as a part of the site. I need to get going on the blog and actually put something there that might attract readers. I'll put up a book page too. My book was published by Harlequin and they retained the copyright, but it is available on Amazon, used copies for a penny! I am working on a romantic suspense series that I will want to showcase on the front page. Since I plan to self-publish book one before the end of the year, I need to get the website finished. And work on other promotional ideas.

That's great, Barb. You have some fantastic idea for your site! I think you'll learn a lot from this challenge to help you with those, and other aspects of marketing, too.

Hi Jane, Would have replied sooner but as I let you know earlier I would be out of internet connection for a good week. Fortunately it was last week not the expected first week of Sept. I survived the wild outdoors hunting crocodiles in the Top End of Australia and am ready to go! My website is http://sandrabennettauthor.com/ where you will find my blog under the heading of news. It use to be a blogspot titled Raising Awesome Readers but I brought it over to my website about a year ago. I link the two together whenever I post something now. Am really looking forward to the challenges ahead this month, I know I certainly need all the suggestions I can get. Thanks again.

Hi Cathy,
You can click on the RSS feed at the top of the page and enroll, or you can manually return to this page every morning - http://www.janeannmclachlan.com, then go to my blog page. The daily challenge is the only thing that will be on this blog during September, so you won't have any trouble finding them all. Unfortunately, if you don't do the RSS feed, the only way to get each new challenge is to come here. Then when you leave a comment, you can check to receive new comments on that post, which is the same for any blog. Glad to have you back! There IS a new challenge posted every day, whether you receive a notice about it or not. Hope that helps.
